Diptera
True flies carry a single pair of functional wings, with the hind pair reduced to club-like halteres that act as gyroscopes during flight. The order is enormous, ecologically diverse, and economically important. It includes pollinators, predators, parasites, decomposers, and the most consequential disease vectors in human history. Adult mouthparts vary from sponging to piercing-sucking, and larvae range from leaf miners to aquatic filter feeders to internal parasites.
