Coleoptera
Beetles make up the largest order of insects, with more than 350,000 described species and many more still unnamed. Roughly one in four animal species on Earth is a beetle.
Their hardened forewings, called elytra, fold over the abdomen and protect the membranous hind wings used for flight. This combination of armor and flight has let beetles colonize nearly every terrestrial and freshwater habitat on the planet, from leaf litter to rotting wood to the surface of high mountain lakes.
